Well how about that, they still have powder weekends at Kirkwood. Or, at least, Sunday night surprise storms on marginally-celebrated 3-day weekends. Thanks MLK for picking a powder day to celebrate equality, and thanks CNET for proving more equal than other employers and giving me the day off!
Big props to Ron Ricci for taking the initiative to rent a place AT the resort, first time most of us had done that. One of Kirkwood’s downsides is definitely the distance to local lodging and community – probably the most remote of any Tahoe resort (huge upside in terms of crowds and finding untracked snow though). Instead of a 45 minute morning trek from Meyers, S Lake, or the Nevada side, we had a 10 minute stumble from the front door to the Timber Creek lift.
Off-slope activities included hot tub hopping, guitar hero (BYOPS2), lavish pasta cooking, and one seriously punch drunk game of Asshole. Football playoffs wrapped things up early on the slopes on Sunday. Myriad Shannon-sponsored Firestone Ales were consumed. Sirius’s “Jam” station got some airplay before the internet keeled over. Somehow, the Fifth Element and Lara Croft 2 were watched.
Not to complain about a bluebird groomers-only Saturday, but the story of the weekend was definitely Monday. Among the remaining participants (whose places of employment weren’t hatin’ on MLK) many conversations were had about whether any ‘06-’07 day compared or whether we’d been transported back to the realm of ‘05 ass-kickingness. The element of surprise was definitely key to our bewonderment – no one at the resort or on the news talked of any more than 6 inches, we guestimated a foot of fresh by noon. I started landing 180s in switch position, with a couple front-side 360s to boot (glorified 270s landing on the toe edge, really). And had some deep thoughts about how carving out a fluff run through trees is an in-the-moment creative process, like ad-libbing or music improvisation.
Needless to say, Monday’s powerhouse powder potential left me pretty excited for three upcoming days in Park City Utah…
