DUB – AMS
In the last-minute mad-dash spirit that would become a cornerstone of our traveling mantra, Nick and I staggered into an ominous throng of people at Dublin Airport, reached the gate with a breezy 10 minutes to spare, and earned ourselves quick cat naps en route to Amsterdam. Ocean-borne windmills and canal-drenched plains welcomed us ashore before we re-routed south by train to our hosts’ Utrecht abode 20 miles outside the big city.
Utrecht: BBQ, banter, & bikes
Our first hosts on the continent were the wonderful and generous Nick and Anya Milne-Blarney, friends of my co-traveler Nick (Gray) from the old country in Ireland, who were currently in the process of raising two of the most adorable children of all time, 4-year-old daughter Luana and 2-year-old son Cuan. Food preparations were underway as we arrived – a barbecue in fact. Georgia, another back-in-the-day friend of the Irish posse, arrived shortly after us and soon the rapid-fire Irish-paced banter was in swing. Discussion veered from European colonial history to the toils of touring musicians to medical politics to Amsterdam coffeeshops, intermittently broken up by Cuan delivering me a plastic toy, paper plate, pillow, and various other items in the vicinity that he must have felt I was lacking.
Being the only American present, I soon found myself fielding questions about grilling and charcoal-burning methodology. This was not the only time on the trip I’d find myself the designated barbecue consultant, despite my scant knowledge of details beyond “open value” and “ignite flame.” At some point during the preparations, Georgia launched into one of the most animated readings of Dr. Seuss’s Fox in Sox in recorded history, dazzling Luana (and the rest of us) with her command of phonemic diction.
Salads, steaks, sunset, and few bottles of top-flight French and Italian wine got the legendary Dutch gezelligheid into gear, and before long I was ready to crash out (almost a bit *too* ready… in hindsight, the early signs of jetlag fatigue having morphed into a sinus cold, yay). The rest of the posse had other ideas though: late-night bike ride through the winding alleys of historic Utrecht. I shouldn’t have been surprised to find the Milne household stocked with more bikes than bicyclists, at least one of which was collapsable down to the size of a briefcase.
