Train to Lyon
Ahhh, the day-long train ride thru the Italian countryside: a much-needed renewal, regrouping, hangover-curing opportunity against a backdrop of gorgeous vineyards, villages, and mountains. I cracked into some journal entries for the first time of the whole trip, dialed up some tunes on my iPod (St. Germain “Tourist” was in there somewhere), took a couple naps, and soaked in the scenery. I also got a huge kick out of all the international toddler-speak buzzing around me – tiny tots yapping in Italian with full-blown MA-ma-MI-ya! inflection and bravado – SERiously adorable.
Extended transfer in Lyon
Getting the tickets to Montpellier was a drawn-out affair, involving two special trips to Termini station in Rome after many prolonged engagements with internet machines both before and during our trip. Best we could do online was sort out which tickets to buy in Rome, and best we could do in Rome was score tickets as far as Lyon, leaving the final French leg to Montpellier to be purchased onsite in Lyon. We’d be arriving at one station in Lyon and departing from another one across town, with barely an hour to make a shuttle connection between. But the internet machines came up with the idea, so who were we to question.
At sunset we pulled into the arachnidesque Lyon-Saint Exupéry station. Figuring out how to get to the other station took some quick thinking and French speaking – both of which I inevitably left to Nick. A few barely-helpful French encounters later we were sitting on a bus (driven by possibly the cutest bus driver ever), glancing impatiently at our watches, plotting our strategy for making some moves with military precision upon arrival.
We arrived with, literally, FOUR minutes till lift-off, deployed ourselves to our tactical positions… and spent the next 15 minutes trying to figure out why our train was not and had never been there. “Only runs on Sundays” is what we suspect the fine print on the wall may have translated to.
Guess you can’t blame the internet machines for overlooking so fine a detail in their route connection aggregating. Next train: tomorrow morning @ 8:15. So it was that Nick and I found ourselves in Lyon, the cuisine capital of France, having had no plans to stay there, within moments of all the restaurants closing – a detail revealed to us by the apologetic gentleman at the hotel counter down the block.The good news: despite a lot of close calls, this was really the only logistical snafu of the trip.
