Soho stroll
Carnaby Street
Apparently Carnaby Street is a big deal if you’re a shopping-district seeker, so I thought I’d test the theory that I can appreciate a good international shopping district (confirmed: nope).
I did, however, manage to get a London Underground t-shirt out of the deal.
Golden Square
I happened upon this place as I walked on toward Piccadilly Circus. Nice little urban space, apparently flanked on all sides by embassies and political buildings, complete with a purple paint-splattered statue in the center. I also ran into my first of three Kangaroos of the day. I was hoping for a clever/quirky explanation for them, but they were just part of an initiative to promote Kangaroo Island and South Australia. FMTPO!
Picadilly Circus
A bustling square in the midst of four-and-twenty shops and theaters, I wandered by pretty quickly without seeing much besides kangaroos and horses.
Grub-stop at Exeter Cafe
Stopped on this sidestreet for a tasty English breakfast, and to scribble a few things in my journal while giving my back and shoulders a rest. This was the only day of the trip where the frame pack took a toll – first by not allowing me into the British Portrait Museum (bastards!), then by forcing a few extra pit stops to rest up the muzzcles.
North Bank stroll
Somerset House
The Somerset House, a major center for film, fashion, and performing arts, was key to my bladder relief management that morning. Indeed, most of what followed would have played out a bit differently if the Somerset House lavatories hadn’t been there for me in my time of need.

A couple of historic and scenic spots I stumbled upon during my arbitrary route along the north bank of the Thames.
Victoria Embankment architecture
These buildings caught my eye during the bus ride into Victoria Station from Stansted Airport two days earlier, so I took a little time to scope them out up close. They’re also visible in the photo I’d taken from the London Eye of St. Paul’s Cathedral and its cityscape surroundings.
That’s a wrap! Next move was to hop a train down to Gatwick Airport, a flight back to Dublin for a last night of Irish shenanigans, then catch a morning flight back to NYC. Hopefully there’ll be a second installment in the not-too-distant future. Euro Cup 2012 anyone?
